This week in yoga, under the gentle glow of the Worm Moon, we explored the theme of “rooting down before we rise.”
As the earth begins to warm and the soil softens, nature reminds us that growth starts beneath the surface. Just like tiny worms preparing the ground for spring, we explored how grounding our bodies and calming our breath creates space for new beginnings. When children connect to the rhythms of the seasons, they begin to understand that growth takes patience — and that even unseen work matters.
Yoga Focus: Cobra & The Worm
We began with Cobra Pose, opening through the chest and lifting our hearts. We then added some playful challenge by practising “The Worm,” building strength, coordination and confidence.
Affirmation:
“I root down in the earth and nourish myself, to rise up.”
Wellbeing Activity:
We made some 'super worm' breathing beads, and spoke about what we eat to nourish ourselves - just as the worms nourish the earth.
Yoga Game: Guess the Pose
This breathing and rhythm game builds regulation, connection and joy. As Dr. Bruce Perry teaches, rhythm is regulating — and this activity weaves together breath, movement, playfulness and belonging.
- Each child holds the edge of a blanket or parachute
- Breath in, lift the blanket
- Breath out, lower the blanket
- Repeat twice
- Teacher taps a child on the should to go under the blanket
- Group lets the blanket fall over the child in the middle
- Child in the middle does a yoga pose and children guess which pose they are doing.
Story Time:
We read Superworm by Julia Donaldson and brought each character to life through yoga poses — from Superworm’s Cobra to buzzing Bee Breath and curling into Child’s Pose.
It was a joyful, grounded session full of imagination and connection.
